Summer is here.

For much of my life, especially as a child, that meant No More School!

Now as a parent of children, no more school just means I have to be responsible for those kids… all day. I’m not complaining… well, not too much. It just changes the nature of what summer freedom looks like. In a few weeks from now, I’ll head to Family Camp out at Arlington Beach with my wife and kids. It will be a great time for all of us and I’m really looking forward to that. I’m also looking forward to having adventures with my kids, exploring the beauty of creation, searching for Geocaches, playing board games. But, after an incredibly hectic few months I am also admittedly looking toward a little bit of time for what I want – time with my wife uninterrupted by kids, time tending to our little garden, time spent listening to live music at a concert I’ve been waiting for.

Last night I had a chance to sit fireside with a friend, enjoying the infrequent indulgence of smoking a nice pipe of tobacco and talking about politics. It was great. I mean, the state of things politically isn’t great, but it felt good to talk about it and be thankful for the simple joys of a fire on a lovely summer evening. I look forward to welcoming more people to my fireside in the coming weeks.

I also look forward to welcoming people to The Bratton Backyard for what has become a bit of a habit for us as Von Bieker returns to Saskatoon this summer to play more bow tie rock to haunt your heart. Von Bieker will be coming to The Bratton Backyard on the evening of Friday, August 16. Tickets are on sale now, so mark your calendar, and then head on over to our website to reserve your spot - bratton-backyard.square.site

My friend Amanda Trapp and I will also be playing some songs to open the show for Dave Von Bieker that night, which I’m looking forward to. Amanda is great and I’ve loved all the chances I’ve had to collaborate with her on various musical and theatrical projects. We’ll be playing a mix of original songs and renditions of some musical theatre classics before Von Bieker takes the stage.

I hope you can make it to The Bratton Backyard on August 16, or let me know if you want to join me fireside some other night, because when I’m not adventuring with my kids that’s what I want to be doing this summer.

Have a great summer!
